Well, at least my car did. The Saturday of Easter weekend, I was returning from Nyakaliro where I had met with the Bible Interpretation class. While on the road just outside of a very small village called Nyamizeze, I saw that a bus was coming slowly down the middle of the road. Oncoming buses on narrow dirt roads are par for the course here, so there was no initial alarm. But when I saw how closely the driver was trying to pass by me, I was concerned. I moved all the way over to the very side of the road (any further and I would have been in the bushes), but the bus was still coming too close to the Land Cruiser. I got a sinking feeling in my stomach when I heard the bus begin to grind up against the driver’s side.
The bus stopped, and the driver and I exchanged information. I then drove on to Sengerema and stopped at the police station to get a vehicle inspection done. The last three weeks have been full of any number of phone calls, conversations, and visits in order to get things squared away. Thankfully, things seem to be winding down, and hopeful the car should be back to fighting shape this week.
